Turvey Inducted into American College of Surgeons

Dr. Timothy Turvey, chair of the Department of Oral and Maxilliofacial Surgery, was recently inducted into the American College of Surgeons (ACS). It is the first time ACS has inducted single-degree oral and maxillofacial surgeons as fellows.

“This is a historical landmark which is a highlight of my career and speaks well of our profession, the UNC School of Dentistry and the University,” said Turvey.

Turvey’s induction took place during the opening ceremony of the 103rd Annual Meeting of the ACS on October 16 in Washington, D.C. ACS is the oldest and largest surgical organization in the country, and is widely considered as the most prestigious as well. The goals of the organization include inspiring quality to ensure the highest standards and better outcomes.

During his career, Turvey has received many honors, including the Gies Award for the Advancement of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, the Distinguished Educator Award from the Southeast Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and the Service Award from the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and from the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Turvey joined the school’s faculty in 1975 and has dedicated his life to educating students and residents. During this time Turvey has trained countless residents, many of whom have become leaders in their communities, states, the U.S. military and academics. As a national and international expert in oral and maxillofacial surgery, he also educates practicing dental professionals, lecturing globally about cleft palate, surgical orthodontics and craniofacial surgery. He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed manuscripts and numerous book chapters, and he serves as co-editor for two textbooks.
