Tauber, Schricker Receive Community Engagement Fellowship
Korry Tauber and Catherine Schricker, both DDS Candidates 2018, were recently chosen to receive a 2015 Community Engagement Fellowship from the Carolina Center for Public Service. The fellowships are awarded to graduate and professional students who develop an innovative and sustainable strategy to satisfy complex social needs. Tauber and Schricker are the first UNC School of Dentistry students to be awarded this fellowship.
Tauber and Schricker created and implemented an oral health educational program to supplement the North Carolina Dental Society’s North Carolina Missions of Mercy (NCMOM) clinics, a portable free dental clinic. They collaborated with community partners and UNC faculty mentors to develop their program. The oral health education program is now a permanent component of the NCMOM clinics through which student volunteers provide one-on-one personalized dental health instruction using visual aids in combination with interactive demonstrations.
“It is a great honor to be recognized with a fellowship from the Carolina Center for Public Service. We are so thankful for their support, along with that from the UNC School of Dentistry and the North Carolina Dental Society,” said Tauber. “We are proud to say that the residents of North Carolina who come to the NCMOM clinics for dental treatment will now have the opportunity to learn how to care for their smiles.”
During his time at UNC School of Dentistry, Tauber has also dedicated his time volunteering with the American Student Dental Association and represents the school as a Barakat Student Ambassador. Schricker is the dentistry vice chair for the University Honor Court, a Barakat Student Ambassador and regularly volunteers at the Inter-Faith Council Soup Kitchen through the Catholic Newman Center and at Habitat for Humanity. Tauber and Schricker also serve as the president and vice president, respectively, of their DDS class and look forward to more opportunities in which they can help serve their community.
