Effective June 3, Alden K. Phillips, DDS, began his appointment as a full-time associate professor of comprehensive dentistry at the UNC Adams School of Dentistry.

“I am thrilled to be a part of such a wonderful organization, and I’m honored to play whatever role I can in continuing the awesome responsibility of training and educating dentists of the future,” said Phillips. “I am humbled by the responsibility and look forward to furthering our mission of ‘transforming dentistry for better health’ through relentless integrated care and scholarship.”

Phillips’ responsibilities as an associate professor include teaching comprehensive dentistry, working in the clinics and seeing patients at the Dental Faculty Practice.

“Dr. Phillips is a passionate educator and clinician that will enhance the mission of the UNC Adams School of Dentistry through clinical teaching and his involvement in the development of the ACT curriculum,” said Ryan Cook, DDS, MS, chair of the Department of Restorative Sciences. “Dr. Phillips brings experience in both practice and education to the UNC Adams School of Dentistry. His addition will greatly enhance the clinical experience and education of our DDS students and residents.”

Phillips earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the Adams School of Dentistry in 1988. Prior to joining the Adams School of Dentistry faculty, he served as the supervisory dentist at the W.G. “Bill” Hefner VA Medical Center for eight years. He was lead faculty at the L.D. Pankey Institute and held clinical appointments with the dental hygiene and dental assisting program at Forsyth Technical Community College.

He began his dental career with his father, Dr. Kenneth Phillips, and maintained a successful private practice with him for 20 years in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Together they provided care to underserved community there by sponsoring free clinics in eight counties and six states.

Phillips has been a member of the American Dental Association for 22 years, and a member of the Academy of General Dentistry for 24 years. Phillips has given dozens of invited presentations across the country. He is a co-team leader of the Adams School of Dentistry’s Clinical Curriculum Development for third- and fourth-year DDS students and a member of the faculty calibration committee.
