Frequently Asked Questions

How is the School of Dentistry Different From Private Practice?

The UNC School of Dentistry is an educational facility.   Patients accepted for treatment provide practical clinical experiences for students and receive high-quality care at reduced fees relative to those found in private practice.  Before you decide if you want to become a patient it is helpful to know that:

Who Will Provide My Treatment?

Care in the student clinics is delivered by approximately 400 students who are enrolled in the doctorate in dental surgery program (D.D.S.) and allied dental education programs (dental hygiene and dental assisting).   Treatment could be provided by more than one student over time.

How Are Students Supervised?

Student dental professionals are attended and assisted by over 400 full and part-time faculty and staff.  During a typical dental procedure, each step is checked and approved by the attending faculty member.

When Are Clinics Open?

Most appointments in the student clinics take place in three-hour blocks between 10:00am-1:00pm and 2:00-5:00pm. The School of Dentistry is open Monday through Friday (excluding holidays) from 8:00am to 5:00pm. The School of Dentistry is closed on Saturday and Sunday. Emergency care can be obtained at times other than when the regularly scheduled clinics operate.

How Much Will My Treatment Cost?

Fees in the Student Clinics at the School of Dentistry are about one-third of those in private practice.   At the time you receive your treatment plan, you will also be informed of the specific fees for the services you need.  Note that pre-payment is required for some procedures such as dentures, crowns and root canals.  Failure to pay promptly will result in a “financial lock” on your account.   Further treatment cannot be provided until the balance is paid in full.

What If I Cannot Affort Dental School Fees?

The School of Dentistry does not provide financing for treatment.   Many patients choose to pay with their personal credit card.

How Long Are The Appointments?

Most appointments in the student clinics are 3 hours in length.   Clinic sessions are scheduled from 10:00am –1:00pm and 2:00 – 5:00pm.

Are Dental Insurance and Medicaid Accepted?

Medicaid is accepted in the pre-doctoral clinics.   However, the School does NOT file insurance claims for patients with dental insurance.   A “walk-out statement” will be issued after payment has been made by the patient.  The statement can then be used by patients to file claims with their insurance carrier for reimbursement.
