On Monday, January 14, UNC School of Dentistry's chapter of the American Student Dental Association (ASDA) welcomed Pam Silberman, J.D., Dr.P.H., to speak on the upcoming implementation of the U.S. Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

Silberman spoke at the ASDA-hosted lunch and learn event called “Pizza and Policy,” where she gave an interactive presentation explaining how the impending health care reform legislation will affect the dental profession and the oral health of millions of Americans. The session was followed by a question and answer session.

“Dr. Silberman's presentation on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was a valuable and timely lesson on how the U.S. health care system, including dentistry, is poised to change,” says Ben Anders, D.D.S. Candidate 2016, secretary of UNC's ASDA chapter and organizer of the event. “As a student-run organization that seeks to educate and advocate for dental professionals, ASDA is grateful that Dr. Silberman took the time to visit the UNC School of Dentistry and help us further understand a law that will undoubtedly have an impact on our careers.”

Silberman, a national health policy expert, is the president & CEO of the North Carolina Institute of Medicine (NCIOM), where she also serves as publisher of the “North Carolina Medical Journal.” In addition to her full-time position with the NCIOM, she is a clinical professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management at UNC's Gillings School of Global Public Health, where she teaches courses focused on underserved populations and safety-net programs.
