Dental Hygiene Students Receive National Honors

Kailyn Tran and Ginny McBride, both second-year dental hygiene students at UNC-Chapel Hill, recently placed third in an American Association of Public Health Dentistry award category stressing dental hygiene student achievement in community dentistry and dental public health.

In their research project, Tran and McBride assessed the need for dental care in elementary-aged children in underserved areas of Chapel Hill and Carrboro and then provided oral health education to children and parents in these communities. They worked with TABLE, a not-for-profit organization focused on feeding hungry children in Chapel Hill and Carrboro.

Tran and McBride will present a poster of their research project, titled “Bringing Dentistry to the TABLE,” at the National Oral Health Conference, to be held in St. Louis in late April.

The American Association of Public Health Dentistry, founded in 1937, is the largest dental public health organization in the world.
