Students, Faculty Member Receive ADEA Honors
The American Dental Education Association (ADEA) recently honored three UNC-Chapel Hill dental students and a faculty member for academic excellence in preventive dentistry and leadership in allied dental education.
Tanya E. Ashe, a second-year DDS student; Shannitta L. Bridgers, a third-year DDS student; and Christopher L. Durham, a fourth-year DDS student, received the 2007 ADEA/Listerine Preventive Dentistry Scholarships; each recipient has $2,500 to apply toward tuition and fees for predoctoral dental study.

The three students received plaques honoring them as recipients of the ADEA/Listerine Preventive Dentistry Scholarship.
Twelve predoctoral dental students nationwide received the scholarships, presented at the 84th ADEA Annual Session awards ceremony, held March 18 in New Orleans.
Rebecca S. Wilder, director of the Graduate Dental Hygiene Program, received the 2007 ADEA/Colgate-Palmolive Company Allied Dental Educators Fellowship at the awards ceremony. This fellowship’s mission is to promote the leadership development of faculty members in allied dental health.
As a part of this fellowship, Wilder will participate in the yearlong ADEA Leadership Institute, where the nation’s most promising leaders at academic dental institutions focus on a wide range of issues influencing dental and allied dental education.
“I can’t tell you what a thrill it is to be in the audience at this awards ceremony, attended by hundreds of the country’s leaders in dental education, and see our students and faculty recognized for their significant contributions to dental education,” said Dr. John N. Williams, dean of the School of Dentistry. “Their professional accomplishments have and will positively influence not only our School but also the oral health of our fellow citizens. I’m very proud of them.”
