The School Experience

Life in Chapel Hill

Located in the rolling hills of the North Carolina Piedmont, Chapel Hill is a quaint and friendly community of 54,000 people that boasts big-city opportunities – including art, music and film festivals, and a thriving downtown scene of shops and restaurants. With the North Carolina beaches just a few hours to the east and the North Carolina mountains a few hours to the west, students, faculty, staff and families have a wide spectrum of recreational and cultural opportunities.

Called “the Southern Part of Heaven” by locals, Chapel Hill is a place where town and gown meet, such as when student and faculty creativity feed the local arts and entertainment scene and when the community unites to cheer on the university’s athletic teams.

Chapel Hill is part of the Triangle area, along with Durham and Raleigh, the North Carolina state capital. Research Triangle Park (RTP), located between the cities, is frequently listed as one of the best places in America for business and careers. Neighboring universities in the Triangle include Duke University, North Carolina State University and North Carolina Central University, along with a handful of smaller colleges and higher education institutions.
