The original Operative Dentistry Clinical Research Unit (OD-CRU) was planned an implemented by Clifford M. Sturdevant (DDS, Chair, 1962-1982).  As part of implementing that plan, Karl F. Leinfelder (DDS, MS, Biomaterials, 1969-1983) was hired.  Dr. Leinfelder directed the OD-CRU, acquired a wide variety of research contracts and grants, developed most of the contemporary research procedures and protocols, established a wide base of collaborations with US dental companies, and trained the department as clinical research investigators.  In 1983, Aldridge D. Wilder (DDS, 1970-present) assumed the responsibility as the OD-CRU director and has been its steward ever since.

Since its inception in 1969, the OD-CRU has managed more than 54 long-term clinical research trials, typically ranging from 3-20 years in length.
