Di Giosia Begins Appointment with Department of Endodontics, Center for Pain Research

Dr. Massimiliano Di Giosia was recently jointly appointed as a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Endodontics and the Center for Pain Research and Innovation.

“I’m very excited to join UNC and to work in a multidisciplinary environment with a lot of possibilities for clinical activities and research,” said Di Giosia. “I hope that my training in orofacial pain, orthodontics and dental sleep medicine will be a resource for the school and for the patients.”

In his new role, Di Giosia is responsible for clinical activity in orofacial pain, TMD and dental sleep medicine. He’ll also focus on clinical research as well as teaching and supervising the residents of the school’s new orofacial pain residency program.

“We are very fortunate to have Dr. Di Giosia as a new faculty member,” said Dr. Tim Wright, interim chair of the Department of Endodontics. “His unique expertise in both orthodontics and maxillofacial pain medicine, coupled with extensive experience, will greatly enhance the Oral and Maxillofacial Pain Program and will help to advance our inter- and intra-professional collaborations and teaching.”

Di Giosia earned his dental degree from the University “G.d’ANNUNZIO” of Chieti, Italy before coming to the U.S. to complete his residency in orofacial pain at the University of Kentucky. He then traveled back to Italy to complete his postgraduate work in headache medicine (University of Torino) and his residency in orthodontics (University of Cagliari). He practiced in Italy for a number of years, focusing on orthodontics, orofacial pain and dental sleep medicine. During this time, he was also an adjunct professor at the University of Cagliari School of Dentistry, where he taught fifth-year dental students about orofacial pain, and he was a consultant in dental sleep medicine at the Sleep Center of Villa Serena Hospital in Pescara, Italy.

He is a member of the European Academy of Craniomandibular Disprders, the European Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine, a member of the International Association for the Study of Pain, and a board member of the Italian Society of Dental Sleep Medicine.
