Ms. Shannon Mitchell

Ms. Shannon Mitchell (More Detail)

Ms. Mitchell is Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Dental Ecology at the UNC School of Dentistry. She did her teaching internship and completed her Masters in Dental Auxiliary Teacher Education at UNC in 1990. She has received the Faculty Appreciation Award and the Teaching Excellence Award from each class since 1990.

Ms. Mitchell serves on the Infection Control Committee at the School of Dentistry, and the Outcomes Assessment Teaching Committee. She is the junior Dental Hygiene clinic supervisor, and course director for the junior clinic courses. She also teaches Dental Ethics, Dental Office Management, and is the coordinator of the Pediatric Dentistry tract for dental hygiene students. She is also the co-course director for the clinical teaching course in the Master's Program in the Dental Hygiene curriculum.

She holds memberships in the Dental Auxiliary Teacher Education Association, American Dental Hygienists' Association, the International Association for Dental Research, and American Association of Dental Schools and the ADA.

She is currently the project coordinator and investigator at the Smart Start Dental Program in Orange County.

Her research interests include clinical evaluation of dental products and assessment of dental needs among children 0-5 years old. She currently is in her 5th year as the project coordinator for the Smart Start Dental Program in Orange County, which assesses the dental needs of 0-5 year olds in Day Care Centers and homes.
