"Preparing for Biomedical Research in the 21st Century"

Harold C. Slavkin, D.D.S.

Dr. Harold Slavkin has been a Professor of Biochemistry and Nutrition at the University of Southern California School of Dentistry since 1968 and directed the Center for Craniofacial Molecular Biology at the university. Dr. Slavkin is a world-renowned scientist and lecturer and has published more than 250 scientific publications, mostly in the area of craniofacial molecular biology. In addition, he has served as Principal Investigator for the NSF-sponsored "PRAXIS" project designed to improve science learning and teaching within 32 inner city elementary schools in Los Angeles. He has produced and written a number of PBS film documentaries including "Why in the World?", "A Lifetime of Change" and "The Changing Face of Dentistry". Recently he received the distinction of being named as the Director of the National Institute of Dental Research. In that capacity Dr. Slavkin will guide the direction of oral health research, both at the NIDR and in the extramural programs throughout the university of the United States, well into the next century.
