Alumni & Friends

UNC DentistrE News

July 28, 2010

Dear Friend of the UNC School of Dentistry:

It’s hot and muggy, we recently celebrated our country’s 234th birthday, and most UNC students have left campus for the summer. And while things may be a bit quieter in Chapel Hill, your School of Dentistry continues its important work in the clinics, classrooms, and offices of this great school.

It also continues just outside the School, at the corner of Manning Drive and Columbia Street, as construction workers remain on schedule to complete the new Dental Sciences Building for an early 2012 occupancy. We look forward to showing you around the building once it is completed. In the meantime, you can view photos of the project here. The State of North Carolina has been very generous and provided the majority of the funding for this critical facility, but we must raise $6.1 million to complete the project. Alumni and friends have committed approximately $3 million thus far, and our Campaign Steering Committee, headed up by Dr. Jim Harrell, Sr. and Dr. Chuck Norman, will be working over the next 12-18 months to raise the remaining funds to ensure the completion of the Dental Sciences Building. You’ll be hearing more about our efforts in the months ahead.

We would like to take this opportunity to announce that Dr. Steven Offenbacher, a UNC-Chapel Hill faculty member since 1991, has been selected chairman of the School of Dentistry’s Department of Periodontology. Dr. Offenbacher had been serving as interim department chairman since Feb. 1. Dr. Offenbacher is the OraPharma Distinguished Professor of Periodontal Medicine in the school, and he also directs the Center for Oral and Systemic Diseases. A past president of the American Association for Dental Research, Dr. Offenbacher’s national and international honors include the International Association for Dental Research’s Basic Research in Periodontal Disease Award, the Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Special Impact Award and the American Dental Association’s Norton M. Ross Award for Excellence in Clinical Research. Please join us in congratulating Dr. Offenbacher on his appointment.

It may be difficult to think about fall weekends and football as you try to stay cool in our record-breaking heat, but please mark October 30 on your calendars for the Dental Alumni Association Barbecue Tailgate and Football Game. Join us at the Top of the Hill’s new Great Room for barbecue and all the fixin’s 2 ½ hours prior to the Tar Heels’ homecoming game with William & Mary. You’ll receive information in the mail soon. You can also find more details on this and other upcoming events here. Unfortunately, we won’t know kickoff time until about 10 days prior to the game. Also, for those of you on Facebook, be sure and "Like" the new UNC Dental Alumni Association page, found here!

The Tar Heels open the season at 8 pm Saturday, September 4 at the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Game in Atlanta where they’ll face perennial national power LSU. Our friends in the UNC Ticket Office have set up a link especially for School of Dentistry alumni and friends if you would like to order tickets for the game, which will be played in the Georgia Dome.

You’ll also be receiving information soon about the School of Dentistry’s Alumni and Friends Reception at the annual ADA Conference in Orlando. We’ll gather from 7-9 pm Saturday, October 9 in the Lake Eola A Room at the Orlando Hilton. Please join us for a drink and appetizers and the opportunity to re-connect with John Stamm, the School’s interim dean, Associate Dean of Advancement Paul Gardner, faculty members, and other alumni and friends.

Finally, the School’s Dean’s Club Dinner will be held at 6:30 pm Friday, November 5. Anyone who contributes $1,000 or more annually to the Dental Foundation of North Carolina/School of Dentistry is a member of the Dean’s Club. If you’re not a member, please consider making a gift by clicking on this link and following the instructions. You can target your tax-deductible gift toward the new Dental Sciences Building, the School’s Dean’s Fund, or a specific department, scholarship or other fund. Thank you in advance for your support of the School of Dentistry!

We would love to see you at the alumni and friends reception at the ADA meeting on October 9, or here in Chapel Hill prior to the William & Mary football game on October 30 or at the Dean’s Club Dinner on November 5. Until then, please contact us (919-966-4563) if we can help you with anything at all at Carolina.

Sincerely,
