Dental Alumni Association

March 25, 2011

Dear Fellow UNCDAA Member,

As many of you have heard, the UNC Dental Alumni Association Board of Directors has been deliberating about the future of the UNCDAA's dues structure for the last few months, and I am writing now to update you on the status of these discussions.  At its February 18, 2011 meeting and after receiving a great deal of feedback from School alums, the Board voted to eliminate the Association's dues component and to include all DDS alums in the UNCDAA.

The Board believes that eliminating the dues requirement will benefit the School in many ways.  One, it will make the operations of the UNCDAA and the Dental Foundation of North Carolina a lot more fluid.  In its current state, the UNCDAA and the DFNC work hand in hand within the Office of Advancement to connect alumni to the School and to raise funds for the School.  With the elimination of the dues structure, the UNCDAA will retain an autonomous board that will continue to determine what types of events and communications are most helpful in connecting alumni and friends to the School, while the DFNC will continue to have its own board and the responsibility to raise funds - many of which are already used for the benefit of the alumni events and communications mentioned above.  The difference is that the DFNC will now fund all UNCDAA activities, not just a portion of them, as it was in the past.

Second, it is the Board's hope that this effort will increase funding support of the School of Dentistry as alumni won't be splitting their support of the School through the UNCDAA dues payments and with their tax-deductible contributions to the DFNC or School.

The Board wishes to recognize lifetime membership commitments in a manner that they deserve.  Members of the Board have formed an ad hoc committee to study suggestions on how to honor these memberships and will finalize the reward at the Board's August meeting.  We will be in touch with our life members in the weeks following.

As mentioned above and in lieu of dues, I encourage you to make a fully tax-deductible gift to the School of Dentistry's annual fund - the School's and the UNCDAA's source of key expendable support.  To make your gift, please contact Sarah Andrews, Executive Director of the UNCDAA, at (919) 537-3257 or  She'll be happy to walk you through the process.

Thank you for your ongoing support of the UNCDAA and of the School of Dentistry.  Please don't hesitate to contact me or Sarah with your thoughts, ideas, and questions.
