The Department of Operative Dentistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill offers a three-year graduate program leading to a Master of Science in dentistry degree conferred by the Graduate School of the University of North Carolina, as well as a certificate in operative dentistry. The primary objective of this program is to provide advanced operative dentistry training that will prepare graduates for careers in dental education and research. Graduates also have the potential for other careers such as clinical or technical research directors in companies with a dental emphasis, and consultants to dental corporations, insurance providers, public health policy organizations, professional dental societies, and philanthropic dental research or education funding agencies. The design of the program is consistent with the stated objectives in the ADEA (formerly AADS) Curriculum Guidelines for Postdoctoral Operative Dentistry (J Dent Educ 1993; 57: 832-836).
