Orofacial Pain Graduate Program
The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill offers a two year Orofacial Pain Graduate program leading to a Certificate in Orofacial Pain. This is a combined Orofacial Pain Certificate and Oral Biology PhD Program (with focus on Pain Neurobiology). Candidates must apply separately to both programs and be independently accepted by both programs. The Certificate will be awarded upon completion of both programs.
The Orofacial Pain Certificate program is approved and accredited by the Council on Dental Education of the American Dental Association. The program include clinics, didactic curriculum, journal club, case conferences, research, and rotations to specialized pain clinics affiliated with the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry and UNC Hospitals. Half of the program time is dedicated to the diagnosis and management of orofacial pain. The Didactic curriculum encompasses biomedical sciences, functional neuroanatomy and neurophysiology of pain, behavioral sciences, clinical sciences, multidisciplinary pain management, teaching and research. Upon completion of the program, the residents are eligible for examination and certification by the American Board of Orofacial Pain.
