General Practice Residency Certificate Program
Acceptance requires graduation and receipt of a DDS or DMD degree from a US or Canadian dental school accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association. Applicants must be final year students or graduates of US or Canadian Dental Schools and be eligible for a North Carolina State Board of Dental Examiner's Intern Permit or North Carolina Dental License. Unfortunately, current North Carolina dental licensure requirements for foreign-trained dentists create credentialing concerns that cannot be addressed in a timely manner for enrollment of the foreign-trained dentist in this clinical training program.
The Resident Selection Committee considers all applicants for interview only when a complete application is received. This program does not observe "in-state" quotas. Competitive applicants selected for an interview in Chapel Hill will be contacted. The interview is a full day process and allows candidates to tour our hospital facility and interact with current residents and faculty.
Admission criteria are applied equally to all participants regardless of race, sex, color, national origin, or religion. The University and our program encourage minority student applications.
Applications are due no later than November 1 to be considered for the class that begins the following July. Applications through PASS are due no later than October 19.
Participation in the Postdoctoral Dental Matching Program is REQUIRED for admission to our program. Application may be obtained by writing:

In addition to the PASS application, a UNC Hospitals Application for Residency Training and Authorization for Release of Information must be completed by each applicant and sent directly to the residency program director. The application can be printed from the UNC Healthcare website or a hardcopy can be requested by emailing the GPR program director, Dr. Robert Hollowell. All of the UNC Hospital Application requirements for letters of recommendation are met by a complete PASS application that includes two Professional Evaluations and the Institutional Evaluation.
As an alternative to the PASS application service, candidates may apply directly to the program by submitting the following:
- UNC Hospitals Application for Residency Training and Authorization for Release of Information
- Curriculum Vitae and Personal Statement regarding the candidate's reason for applying to a General Practice Residency
- Dental School transcript
- Degree granting Undergraduate College/University transcript
- National Dental Boards scores
- Dean's letter from Dental School Dean or Associate Dean for Academic Affairs
- Three letters of personal recommendation from Dental School faculty members, one of whom is a Department Chair.
Each applicant must complete the background check questions and return them to the program director.
