2015 Matt Wood Award winner, Dr. Glenn Minsley, and Matt Wood symposium founder, Dr. Sompop Bencharit.

In November 2012, Dr. Bencharit created and launched the Matt Wood Symposium to honor our beloved faculty, Matt Wood. The symposium is held in the Koury Oral Health Sciences Building and brings distinguished prosthodontists, alumni and private practice dentists together for continuing education lectures given by members of our own department faculty as well as a keynote speaker.

In conjunction with the symposium the department hosts an annual dinner, called “Dinner with Matt.” The symposium and the dinner are used to honor the prosthodontics faculty that has shown excellence in teaching and service to the school. Matt Wood was the first recipient of the award.

The symposium, dinner and award are used to raise awareness for the Matthew T. Wood Faculty Support Endowment Fund. The fund is used to support the teaching activities of the faculty as well as recruitment and support.

The 2015 symposium featured keynote speaker: Monish Bhola, a world-renowned speaker and educator, and diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. His areas of interests include dental implants, oral plastic surgery and advanced bone and soft tissue grafting for teeth and implants. “Dinner with Matt” was held at the historic Carolina Inn, where Dean Weintraub and Dr. Sun-Yung Bak made remarks, and Dr. Glenn Minsley was awarded with the annual Matt Wood Award for his contributions to prosthodontics education and practice. The symposium was sponsored by Absolute Dental Services.

2014 saw the creation of the Matt Wood Prosthodontics Award. This award, set-up through the Dental Foundation of North Carolina, was created to support post-bachelor’s degree individuals who are highly motivated, interested in doing research and plan on pursuing a dental career.
