About Our School

Our Education Programs

In addition to offering its Master of Science in Periodontology, the Department of Periodontology is involved in many teaching activities for the school’s DDS and post-DDS programs. Many of our faculty are mentors in the Oral Biology PhD Program and for our advanced NIH-funded clinical research training program entitled “NexGen.”

In addition to offering a certificates/degrees in master’s and specialty certificate in periodontology we also offer a PhD degree in Oral Biology. Our oral biology emphasis is in three areas: host-parasite interaction, neuroscience and extracellular matrix biology.

The department is also proud to welcome scientists and clinicians from all over the world who come to UNC for educational experiences in basic and clinical research and in patient care. This program has recently been formalized as an Observer Externship Program that provides training opportunities, which are from one semester to 10 months, for individuals who are on sabbatical leave or other types of leave from their parent institutions. For more information on this program contact Dr. Silvana Barros, departmental director of the program, or Dr. Ceib Philips, institutional director of the program.

Department faculty members also participate regularly as lecturers and speakers at Continuing Education (CE) programs to continue the education of practicing dentists. To see what current CDE offerings are available through UNC, click here.
