Our Education Programs

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is involved in many teaching activities for the school’s DDS and post-DDS programs. The department is proud to offer an externship in the department, which is open to students from UNC and from other dental schools. The goal of the undergraduate curriculum is to teach the importance of patient selection, teach exodontia and minor surgical procedures to a level of comptence, and to expose all students to the scope of practice of the specialty.

The department also offers a six-year MD integrated residency, which leads to the awarding of a certificate in oral and maxillofacial surgery, an MD degree and one year of general surgery. The program is coordinated with the UNC School of Medicine.

The department faculty members also participate regularly as lecturers and speakers at Continuing Dental and Medical Education programs for practicing dentists and physicians. To see what current CE offerings are available through the UNC School of Dentistry, click here.
