The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is academically based in the School of Dentistry, linked to the UNC School of Medicine and functions primarily in University of North Carolina Hospitals. Affiliated hospitals include the Veterans Administration Hospital in Durham, N.C. and Mission St. Joseph Hospitals in Asheville, N.C. The department teaches and practices a broad scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery. There are five faculty, 17 residents and 34 part-time faculty. The department offers an MD integrated residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery that prepares candidates for examination and certification by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and for a career that encompasses the broad scope of this specialty. The program is approved by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. The department provides oral and maxillofacial surgery education, both clinical and didactically, to the 320 pre-doctoral students enrolled at UNC School of Dentistry and accepts medical students, dental students from other universities and surgical residents who desire rotations.
