  • Oral Biology PhD Class of 2015 student Dr. Thatsanee Saladyanant, working in the lab of faculty Dr. Jennifer Webster-Cyriaque, receives IADR Colgate Research in Prevention Travel Award, was a 2014 Hatton finalist, and received the UNC CV-Starr Scholarship

  • Faculty and Exec. Assoc. Dean Dr. James Beck reports in JADA on the findings from the first large scale study on oral health among Latinos and Hispanics

May 2014

  • Faculty Dr. Anne Sanders and Dr. Gary Slade’s paper (Sanders A, Slade G. State cigarette excise tax, secondhand smoke exposure, and periodontitis in US nonsmokers. Am J Public Health. 2013 Apr;103(4):740-6) was selected as winner of the 2014 IADR Aubrey Sheiham Award for Distinguished Research in Dental Public Health Sciences
  • Faculty Prof. Rebecca Wilder was awarded the inaugural Four Corners Study Club Faculty Mentoring Award, established to recognize outstanding mentoring practices provided to UNC School of Dentistry faculty by full-time faculty members
  • Faculty Dr. Gary Slade received the 2014 Class of 1958 Distinguished Service Award for the 2013 Journal of Dental Research paper coauthored with Dr. Anne Sanders titled: Slade GD, Sanders AE, Do L, Roberts-Thomson K, Spencer AJ. Effects of fluoridated drinking water on dental caries in Australian adults. J Dent Res. 2013 Apr;92(4):376-82. The purpose of the award is to recognize research conducted by the faculty of the School of Dentistry that has “the greatest potential for DIRECT contributions to the practice of dentistry and dental health generally.”
  • The Dental Hygiene Class of 2014 recently won first place the 2014 ADHA/Sunstar YouTube contest for their video on flossing
  • Recent MSDH Class of 2014 graduates Kristin Dillow and Brittany Minichbauer were awarded the American Association of Dental Sleep Medicine Student Research Award and presented their research at the annual meeting
  • Dental Hygiene Class of 2015 student Jaehee Yoo received the Ronald W. Hyatt Rotary Public Service Award for her local program “Prevention through Education” to offer dental health services to refugee and immigrant families in Durham, N.C.
  • Appointment of new faculty member Dr. Christine Downey, clinical assistant professor
  • Dental Hygiene Class of 2015 student Gina Moreland elected to serve as student delegate for ADHA

  • MS Dental Hygiene Class of 2014 student Jessica Holloman named a recipient of the ADEA/Crest Oral-B Scholarship for Dental Hygiene Students Pursuing Academic Careers
  • Faculty and Dean Dr. Jane A. Weintraub appointed to the National Advisory Dental and Craniofacial Research Council of the NIH

  • Faculty Ms. Lattice Sams selected as a recipient of the ADEA/AAL Faculty of Color Tuition Scholarship for Professional Development
  • Malawi Dental Project was awarded the 2013 Dr. Thomas J. Zwemer Award from the ADA Foundation for its work with an underserved international population
  • Faculty Dr. Gary Slades’ paper titled: Effects of Fluoridated Drinking Water on Dental Caries in Australian Adults published in Journal of Dental Research (2013 vol 92) was awarded one of the top 10 most read articles from 2013 in the JDR

January 2014

  • Department Manager, Ms. Martha Barbour is awarded the distinguished Order of the Long Leaf Pine from the N.C. Governor
  • Faculty Dr. Allen Samuelson and Dr. Lauren L. Patton named to Chapel Hill Magazine’s “Top Chapel Hill Area Dentists-2014”
