Clinical Study Title
Randomized blinded placebo-controlled clinical trial of caloric vestibular neurostimulation in patients with chronic TMD
****** Not currently enrolling new participants in this Clinical Study. ******
Description/Purpose of the Study
Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are among the most common chronic pain conditions affecting 6 to 12% of the general population.
The purpose of this research study is to examine how the pain of chronic TMD changes in response to a new non-invasive device stimulation, which consists of stimulating the ear canal. Stimulation of the ear canal has been shown to reduce pain in patients with chronic pain. It is thought that this device activates the vestibular nerve (which connects to the brain) and modifies its function. The vestibular nerve also connects to the trigeminal nerve which supplies the jaw joint. However, this is the first time it is being tried in TMD patients.
