Heart Disease and Stroke

Heart Disease Study at the General and Oral Health Center

Studies have shown that inflammation, infection, and gum disease may play a role in stroke and heart disease. Research is being conducted to find out how gum disease can lead to hardening of the blood vessels and potentially contribute to a stroke/mini-stroke. Researchers are looking for markers of inflammation to see what specific markers play a role in the hardening of blood vessels.  The results of these studies may potentially help determine treatment and/or preventive options that can be used to treat the deposits of the blood vessels.
