NC Dental Study
The North Carolina Dental Study will collect information about self-reported dental health in North Carolina. We are interested in obtaining a snapshot of dental health from a random sample of adults from all walks of life. Only people aged 45 to 64 years are included as we are especially interested in the dental health and needs of the Baby Boomer generation. The information will be used in health research to investigate risk factors for dental conditions. The information may help health administrators respond to emerging needs for people in our state. Most information about people's dental health comes from studies of patients or people who use dental services. However, not everyone has ongoing dental problems and not everyone uses dental services on a frequent basis. This study will give us a more complete and accurate picture than we currently have.
The Study is being conducted by Dr. Gary Slade, Dr. Anne Sanders and research staff at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The team is experienced in sample generation, computer-assisted telephone interviews, questionnaire development, data collection, data management, data analysis, and reporting. Telephone interviewers are trained to collect health survey information. Any identifiable information is protected for confidentiality. Only Drs. Slade and Sanders have access to information once collected. Before analysis and reporting, all data are de-identified. No information is published or released in a form that could identify an individual.
The first interviews are scheduled for July 2009, and we expect the final questionnaires will be returned by the end of the year. Laboratory analysis will take several more months, but watch this website for our report posted by July 2010.
