ARRA Supplement Functional Outcomes of Cleft Lip Surgery

Description/Purpose of the Study
We want to study how the face looks and works. The purpose of this study is to measure how your baby’s face and lips look at rest and during various facial movements. In this study we will test babies with and without cleft of the lip and palate. Babies with a cleft lip/palate will be seen both before and after surgery to the lip.

Your baby may be eligible to participate if:
Cleft lip and palate patients: the professional clinical recommendation by the UNCSD Craniofacial Center’s craniofacial plastic surgeon for a cleft lip repair surgery; you are willing to have your baby participate in the study; your baby is between 0 and 6 months of age.
Non-cleft subjects: you are willing to have your baby participate in the study; your baby is between 0 and 6 months of age.
Your baby should not participate if:
Cleft lip ± palate patients: has had surgery for any reason; a diagnosis of a craniofacial anomaly other than cleft lip and palate; a medical history of diabetes, collagen vascular disease, and systemic neurologic impairment.
Non-cleft subjects: has had surgery for any reason including bone surgery; A medical history of diabetes, collagen vascular disease, and systemic neurological impairment.
