What is the Dental Faculty Practice (DFP)?
DFP dental practitioners are School of Dentistry faculty members who contribute extensively to the School’s mission of excellence in dental care. In addition to their clinical practice, faculty practitioners are teaching the dentists of tomorrow and pursuing research discoveries that contribute to improving general and oral health. The DFP practitioners provide general and specialty dental and maxillofacial treatment in a unique clinical setting.

Who will I receive my dental care from at DFP?
All DFP patients receive dental care from dentists who are faculty members of the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry. The School of Dentistry also has student clinics where patients receive dental care exclusively from undergraduate and graduate students who are supervised by faculty. The student clinics are not part of the Dental Faculty Practice. Patients who receive treatment in the student clinics will not be eligible to receive care simultaneously at DFP.
I have multiple dental treatment needs; can I get comprehensive dental care at the DFP?
DFP takes a “team approach” in providing excellence in dental care. Because the Practice provides both general and specialized dental care, each patient’s oral health needs will be determined after seeing a dental practitioner for a comprehensive diagnosis and/ or treatment. Complete care may include appointments with more than one faculty member.
My dentist is suggesting I see a specialist for dental treatment, how do I proceed?
Patients who are under the care of a dentist who recommends specialized dental treatment should contact the DFP at 919-537-3939 to make the appropriate arrangements. Please inform the receptionist that you are being referred for a specific dental treatment. Upon completion of this specialty treatment, the patient will be referred back to his or her dentist.
What type of fees can I expect?
DFP is a fee-for-service dental practice with fees comparable to that found at a private practice in the surrounding community, and payment is due at time of service. We understand that sometimes treatment can be extended over a period of time and may require other payment arrangements. Please speak with the treating dentist and our Patient Accounts Office for more information. We currently accept cash, check, money order, MasterCard or Visa.
