Holloman Named Recipient of ADEA/Crest Oral-B Scholarship for Hygiene Students

Jessica HollomanJessica Holloman, Master of Science in Dental Hygiene Education (M.S.D.H.) Candidate 2014, has been named as a recipient of the ADEA/Crest Oral-B Scholarship for Dental Hygiene Students Pursuing Academic Careers. The national award is given to two students annually.

"Jessica has been an outstanding student and will be a great asset to the dental hygiene profession," said Professor Rebecca Wilder, program director for graduate dental hygiene education. "She is already contributing to the education of future dental hygiene and dental professionals and I know that she has a bright future ahead. She possesses and exhibits the qualities that deserve recognition through the ADEA Crest/Oral-B scholarship."

The ADEA/Crest Oral-B Scholarship for Dental Hygiene Students Pursuing Academic Careers supports dental hygiene students who want to work in academia and are actively enrolled in an education program beyond an associate's degree. Two students are selected each year to receive $2,000 towards their tuition and fees.

Wilder was one of the faculty who nominated Holloman for the scholarship.

Holloman earned her A.A.S. in dental hygiene in 2008 from Wayne Community college before working in private practice for two years while she pursued her B.S.D.H. at the UNC School of Dentistry. She completed her bachelor's degree in 2011 and re-entered private practice until 2012, at which time she enrolled in the M.S.D.H. program at the school. Currently, Holloman is fulfilling her teaching internship requirement by teaching at the University of Portsmouth Dental Academy in the United Kingdom. She will be there until May.

"I feel honored to have received this scholarship," said Holloman. "I am excited for what the future holds for my career as an educator in dental hygiene."

Holloman, who will graduate with her master's degree in May 2014, plans to begin her career in academics following her graduation.
