Bak Begins Appointment with Prosthodontics


Dr. Sun-Yung BakEffective December 2, Dr. Sun-Yung Bak began her appointment as clinical assistant professor in the Department of Prosthodontics.

"I am excited to be here because I can bring private practice experience and experience from different institutions to UNC, one of the best schools in the country," said Bak.

In her role as assistant professor, Bak's responsibilities will include teaching preclinical fixed prosthodontics courses and overseeing fourth-year dental students' clinical group practice. Her research interests lie in maxillofacial prosthetics and digital dentistry. She is interested in continuing the research that she started at UCLA looking at dosimetric distribution of the lesions of the oral cavity in head and neck cancer radiation.

"I'm excited to add Dr. Bak to our faculty," said Dr. Robert Wright, chair of the Department of Prosthodontics. "She is an excellent clinician and will be a great asset to our department as we educate the next generation of dentists. Dr. Bak will also be a great role model for those dental students interested in specialty training in our exciting specialty."

Bak earned her D.D.S. from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry in 1998 and completed a general practice residents at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1999. She spent 10 years in private practice before beginning her prosthodontics training in 2009 at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center, from which she received her certificate in 2012. Bak then completed a fellowship in maxillofacial prosthetics at the UCLA School of Dentistry in 2013. She is board eligible in the American Board of Prosthodontics.
