Derek Hoar Appointed Assistant Dean for Human Resources


Derek HoarEffective June 25, 2012, Mr. Derek Hoar began his appointment as UNC School of Dentistry assistant dean for human resources.

"It is my pleasure to announce that Derek Hoar has joined our school as assistant dean for human resources," said UNC School of Dentistry Dean Jane Weintraub. "The expertise seen in his past employment speaks for itself and illustrates what a qualified candidate he was for the position. He already has great familiarity with our school and campus, so he will be on board quickly. We're so glad that he's chosen to join our school in this capacity."

In his new position with the UNC School of Dentistry, Hoar will have many responsibilities related to human resources. Specifically, he will provide direct management of the Office of Human Resources; provide advice and counsel concerning human resources matters; act as liaison between campus offices and School of Dentistry departments on personnel matters; work with school departments and units to create and implement staff development programs; and will be the lead representative in human resources policy development and interpretation.

Employed with the UNC-CH Office of Human Resources since 2006, Hoar most recently served as the University's employee and management relations consultant. During that appointment, he oversaw the UNC School of Dentistry, School of Medicine, Department of Environmental Health and Safety, among other campus service departments. Hoar's responsibilities included advising management and employees on employment relation matters, counseling management on implementation of SPA and non-EPA performance management systems, and advising management how employee relations practices can be used to achieve organizational objectives. Before joining UNC, Hoar held human resources employments at SAS Institute (1995 - 2006) and Wake Medical Center (1992 - 1995). He was also employed by General Motors (1988 - 1991). Hoar received his Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Lehigh University in 1988. He later earned his Master of Business Administration from the UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School in 1998.
