Felton, Renowned Prosthodontics Professor, Appointed Dean at WVU School of Dentistry
Dr. David Felton, a well-known professor of prosthodontics at our school, has received an appointment to become dean of the West Virginia University School of Dentistry.
A part of our school since 1990, Dr. Felton has served as both the director of graduate prosthodontics studies and the chair of the department of prosthodontics during his time at UNC. He is a past-president of the American College of Prosthodontics and currently serves on the executive council of the Academy of Prosthodontics while maintaining numerous memberships in national and international dental and prosthodontics-focused organizations.
“Dr. David Felton championed prosthodontics at UNC. We are fortunate to continue this legacy,” said Dr. Lyndon Cooper, chair of the department of prosthodontics. “Beyond his national prominence in organized prosthodontics, on the continuing education front and as the editor of the Journal of Prosthodontics, Dr. Felton’s commitment to UNC School of Dentistry is highlighted by his continuous and careful mentorship given to student learning the basic tenants of excellent patient care. “
Dr. Felton’s instruction and research at UNC included implant prosthodontics, restoring endodontically-treated teeth, the relationship between oral health and systemic health, and removable complete and partial prosthetics. His excellent ability to instruct earned Dr. Felton a number of teaching excellence awards, including the Richard F. Hunt Award for Teaching Excellence. He is also a three-time winner of the student-awarded School of Dentistry Teacher Excellence Award.
“As a clinical mentor and course director, he repeatedly demonstrated that he is among the nations’ best dental educators and leaders,” said Cooper. “WVU will benefit greatly from his vision and passion for excellence in clinical dentistry.”
Dr. Felton’s appointment at WVU begins on August 16, 2011.
