Patton Gives Keynote Addresses on HIV in Japan


Dr. Lauren L. Patton, a professor in the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Dentistry’s Department of Dental Ecology, recently gave the keynote addresses at two conferences in Japan.

Patton, also director of the School’s General Practice Residency Program, spoke on “Oral Manifestations of HIV and Periodontal Disease” in Tokyo and Sapporo.

On Jan 13, Patton spoke at the Ninth Annual Meeting of the Japan AIDS Protection Society in Tokyo. The Japanese Foundation for AIDS Prevention sponsored the meeting and invited lectureship in honor of World AIDS Day. World Health Organization statistics for 2005 estimate the number of Japanese individuals with HIV infection at 17,000, and 9,900 of these individuals are women.

On Jan 19, Patton spoke at the HIV Conference of Dental Research in Hokkaido and the Annual Meeting of the Society of AIDS Preventing Act in Sapporo.

While in Japan, Patton gave additional lectures on the oral manifestations of HIV and on occupational injury management for the Kanagawa Odontological Society, Tokyo Dental College (founded in 1890 and the first such educational institution of dentistry in Japan), Tohoku University Graduate School of Dentistry in Sendai, the Niigata University Graduate School of Medical and Dental Sciences in Niigata and Kyushu University Hospital in Hakata Fukuoka.

Patton also spoke on the topic of “Oral Cancer and Oral Complications of Cancer” at Suidoubashi Hospital in Tokyo and at the Hokkaido University Graduate School of Dental Medicine in Sapporo.

Patton has been conducting research in the areas of HIV and oral cancer at UNC-Chapel Hill since 1990.
