Charles Wilson Hughes, member of the Class of '54, dies at 76


Dr. Charles Wilson Hughes, died Sunday, March 28 at the age of 76. Hughes was a member of the Class of '54, the first class of graduates at the UNC School of Dentistry.

Hughes, the son of the late Dr. Jack H. and Mary Wilson Hughes, practiced dentistry in Roxboro, N.C. for 40 years. After attending N.C. State University and Davidson College, he served a tour of duty in the U.S. Army from 1948 to 1950 stationed in Alaska.

Among his accomplishments, Hughes served on the District Board of Health for 27 years. He was a member of the North Carolina Dental Society and a life member of the American Dental Association. As member of Roxboro Presbyterian Church, he served as a deacon, Sunday school secretary/treasurer for 17 years and superintendent for 12 years.

Hughes is survived by his wife, Margaret Dickerson Hughes; two daughters, Ann Hughes of Roxboro and June Hughes Crawford of Hurdle Mills; a brother, Jack Hughes of Winston-Salem; and a grandson, Charles David Lunsford of Hurdle Mills.
