Maggie Fetner, a native of North Carolina, graduated from the UNC SOD in 2011. Maggie was valedictorian of her undergraduate class at NC State University and has been named to the Dean's List every semester during dental school. Maggie served as the Student Body President and was an Albert Schweitzer Fellow. Maggie has joined Todd Grooms (2003) in private practice in Burlington, NC.
Felicia Swinney was born in Augusta, Georgia earned her undergraduate degree from Berea College in Kentucky and her dental degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 2006. As an Officer in the United States Army, Felicia completed an AEGD at Fort Sill, Oklahoma and was then stationed in Seoul, South Korea. Prior to joining our program in Chapel Hill, Felicia was serving as the general dentistry officer at Fort Lee, Virginia. Felicia is practicing with John Christensen (1984) in Durham, NC.
Jordan Olsen was born in Ridgecrest, California and earned his BS from Brigham Young University in Utah. Jordan earned his DDS from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2010. Jordan, who was on the Dean's List for Academic Achievement, has been an active participant in many community based activities and an active volunteer in his community. Jordan completed his MS degree under the direction of Lorne Koroluk and is in private practice in Fayetteville, NC.
Lauren Sanzone was born in Rome, New York. She earned her BA from Smith College in Massachusetts and her DDS from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2010. Lauren, who has been on the Dean's List every year while at the School of Dentistry, has also received numerous awards including being recognized as the Top Student Volunteer for 2008-2009 by ENNEAD Volunteer Society. In addition to her certificate in Pediatric Dentistry, Lauren completed her Master's in Public Health and published a research paper under the direction of Jessica Lee (2002).
Chien Sim was born in Malaysia and earned her BDS from the National University of Singapore in 2008. While a dental student, she was an active volunteer in her community. Since her graduation Chien has been employed by the National Dental Center in Singapore. Chien completed her MS degree under the direction of Hiroko Iida and is practicing in a hospital based practice in Singapore.
Kerry Dove (Certificate and MS 2012) was born in Cleveland, Ohio but came to North Carolina earning her BS from Duke University. Kerry earned her DDS from Boston University where she worked on many community service projects and excelled academically, being named to the Dean’s List multiple semesters. As a dental student she was also the recipient of the Pierre Fauchard Foundation Dental Student Scholarship Award. Kerry is in her own private practice at Concord Pediatric Dentistry in Concord, NC.
Allison C. Eggleston (Certificate and MS 2012) was born in Wilmington, North Carolina. She earned her BS from UNC-Wilmington and her DDS from the UNC School of Dentistry. Allison has been involved with many local service activities. She has, for example, been active in the “Miles for Smiles” program, which is affiliated with our Craniofacial Team, throughout her four years of dental school. Allison is in private practice in Wilmington, NC.
Travis Hicks (Certificate and MS 2012) was born in Salisbury, North Carolina and earned his BS from Wake Forest. He earned his DDS from UNC School of Dentistry where he was named to the Dean’s List multiple times and graduated with Honors. Since graduating in 2008, Travis worked at the Gaston County Health Department Dental Clinic where he has provided care to children and young adolescents. Travis is in private practice with Wake Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry in Raleigh, NC.
Marshall Long (Certificate and MS 2012) was born in Burlington, North Carolina and earned both her BS and DDS at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. As a dental student, Marshall was known for her volunteer and community work while also standing out academically. She was frequently named to the Dean’s List and graduated with Distinction. Marshall was also named the recipient of the Brauer Research Fellowship. Marshall is in private practice with her Dad in Charlotte, NC.
Shannitta Bridgers (Certificate and MS 2011) was born in Greenville, North Carolina and received both her undergraduate and dental degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Shannitta possesses an extensive list of leadership and volunteer experiences, along with a record of award winning research activities and strong academic achievements. Shannitta is practicing at Highland Pediatric Dentistry in Fayetteville, NC.
William “Bob” Cherry (Certificate and MS 2011) was born in Wilmington, North Carolina and received his BA and his dental degree from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Bob has conducted research with members of our department and was a volunteer at the Student Health Action Coalition, along with many other community and volunteer activities. Bob is in private practice in Wilmington, NC.
Jina K. Yoo (Certificate and MS 2011) was born in South Korea and received her BA from Furman University in South Carolina. She attended the Medical University of South Carolina and received her DMD in 2008. Jina’s academic achievements have been recognized both at Furman University and MUSC. She has taken part in multiple international mission trips and speaks four different languages. Jina has opened her own private practice, Mebane Pediatric Dentistry in Mebane, NC.
Bien Lai (Certificate and MS 2011) was born in Hong Kong and received her dental degree from the National University of Singapore. While in dental school Bien was the recipient of many honors and awards for both her academic and research accomplishments. Since receiving her degree, Bien has been practicing as a Dental Officer in the School Dental Health Service in Singapore. Bien will be returning to Singapore where she will be practicing in the dental specialist center along with a part-time academic position.
Kimon Divaris (Certificate and PhD 2011) is from Athens, Greece where he received his DDS from the Athens School of Dentistry in 2005. Since that time Kimon has worked at the Athens School of Dentistry in various instructional roles and has completed his native country’s required military service as an Army Dental Officer. In addition to the pediatric dentistry program, Kimon was also in the PhD program in oral epidemiology. Kimon is a faculty member of the UNC Department of Pediatric Dentistry, Chapel Hill, NC.
Stephanie Jackson (Certificate and MS 2010) was born in Chicago and moved to Charlotte while in high school. She received her BS in biology and her DDS from UNC-CH, where she was one of only three students to graduate with “Distinction.” Stephanie already has a long list of leadership activities, research accomplishments and honors, including being a Fulbright Scholar. Stephanie is in private practice of Scott Goodman in Charlotte, NC.
Elizabeth K. Miller (Certificate and MS 2010) is originally from Atlanta, Georgia but has a long history at UNC-CH. She received her BS in anthropology in 2000, her MS in accounting in 2002, and her DDS with “Distinction” in 2007. Elizabeth brings an extensive and varied research and public health record with her. Liz has also been the recipient of many honors, awards and scholarships. Liz is in practice practice with Frank Courts (1997) in Rocky Mount, NC.
Jossein Shahangian (Certificate and MS 2010) was born in Iran, comes to us from California where he received his BA in biology from the University of California at Berkley and his DDS from UCLA in 2007. In addition to his teaching experience while in dental school, Jossein has extensive leadership training and experience including student government. He has also served as the Director of the Latino American Dental Services, a free children’s dental clinic. Jossein is in private practice in California.
Raymond Tseng (Certificate 2010) is a native of Michigan who received his BS in psychology from Ohio State University. In addition, he received his dental degree and his PhD in Oral Biology also from Ohio State University School of Dentistry. Ray has served in leadership roles in many professional societies and community activities and has been the recipient of many awards and honors. Ray has open his own private practice in Cary, NC.
Elizabeth Prada (Certificate and MPH 2009) is a Michigan native who received a BA in Biology and Public Policy Studies at Duke University. Liz received her dental degree for the University of Pennsylvania where she was the recipient of numerous honors and awards for her academic accomplishments and her research interests.
Antonio Braithwaite (Certificate and MPH 2008) is a native of Brooklyn, NY. A graduate of the School of Public Health’s Bachelor of Science in Nutrition here at UNC, he was our first resident to train dually in Pediatric Dentistry and nutrition. Antonio’s research with Jessica Lee (2002) earned him a summer research fellowship, a Turner Research Award and a trip to the IADR meeting in Hawaii to present his findings on “Dental Utilization by Low Income Pre-School Children”. Antonio’s MPH Thesis work on nutritional counseling practices among NC pediatric dentists has been accepted for publication in Pediatric Dentistry. He is also the dental school’s first ever winner of an Albert Schweitzer Community Service Award for his program to help underserved children and has his own practice Sanford Pediatric Dentistry in Sanford, NC.
Rhonda Kearney (Certificate and MS 2008) is a native of Warrington, NC who graduated magna cum laude with Phi Beta Kappa Honors from UNC-Greensboro with a BS in Biology and Teacher Certification. A NC Teaching Fellow, she taught high school biology for three years in the Guilford/Forsyth School System before entering dental school in 2001. She served as a teaching assistant and tutor during her dental school career. Rhonda was active in the Student National Dental Association group here at UNC, serving as the chair of several committees and as a community coordinator for four major SNDA Community initiatives and as SNDA President 2003-04. Her Master’s Thesis earned her the Leverett Award for outstanding research in Public Health Dentistry. Rhonda has open her own practice in Henderson, NC.
Julie Molina (Certificate and MS 2008) is a native of the small eastern NC town of Aurora. Julie received her BS in Biology at UNC after which she worked for 14 months as a dental assistant for Bobby Elliott (1998) of Cary. Julie was active in Delta Sigma Delta, serving as President in 2003-04. Julie was a school leader for NC Give Kids a Smile in 2003. As a resident at UNC Julie was the recipient of the Spurgeon Graduate Student Table Clinic Award, the Research in Review Day Oral Presentation Award, the AAPD’s Graduate Student Research Award and the AAPD’s OMNII Research Award. She was also a recipient of the Baxter Sapp Fellowship and her Master’s project on root fractures in children and adolescents has been accepted for publication. Julie is practicing with Bobby Elliott at Cary Pediatric Dentistry in Cary, NC.
Tom Bouwens (Certificate and MBA 2007) is a native of Holland, MI. He graduated from Hope College in Michigan with a BA degree in chemistry and a minor in mathematics with Magna Cum Laude honors where he was a four-time All-American swimmer. He attended the University of Michigan, School of Dentistry where he won several scholarships for academic excellence including the William S. Kramer Award of Excellence. At UM he was an AADR Student Research Fellow and NIDCR Short-Term Research Trainee. He received several awards and honors at his dental graduation, including the Alpha Omega Award for high academic honors in his class. He was also selected for Omicron Kappa Upsilon. Tom’s wife, Theresa, is a Michigan native and an elementary school teacher. Tom is practicing in Holland, Michigan.
Matthew T. Goslee (Certificate and MPH 2007) is a recent DDS Graduate from the School of Dentistry at the University of Connecticut in Farmington, CT. He is a graduate of Gettysburg College in Gettysburg, PA where he received a BA degree in political science with a minor in philosophy. At UConn Matt had a keen interest in international health and was involved in projects in both Haiti and Peru. At graduation, Matt won both the Public Health Dentistry Award and the Community Service Award and the prestigious Alpha Omega Award for high academic honors in his class. Matt’s wife, Julie, completed her psychiatry residency here at UNC-CH. Matt is practicing in the Fairfield area of Connecticut.
Jenny Jackson (Certificate and MPH 2007) is a native of Raleigh who received her BS degree in microbiology at North Carolina State University, where she was Valedictorian of the Class of 2000 and selected for Phi Beta Kappa honors. She graduated from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) where she had been involved in a number of research and community-service related projects. She received several graduation honors including recognition as Class Salutatorian and graduated Magna Cum Laude and was selected for Omicron Kappa Upsilon at HSDM. Jenny is in her own practice in Asheville. NC.
Ronald Hsu (Certificate and MS 2006) is a native of Taiwan who spent his formative years here in the United States. His collegiate years were spent at the University of Washington where he won Phi Beta Kappa honors. He received his DDS degree from UW in 2003. Ron won the UW Table Clinic competition in 2002 and was awarded the most outstanding presentation award at the Hinman Student Research Symposium. Ron is currently in private practice in Vancouver, Washington.
Kavita Mathu-Muju (Certificate and MPH 2006) is a native of Canada who received her DMD degree from the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg in 1993. She spent the early part of her career as a contract dentist providing dental care for aboriginal children in rural Manitoba and has a long-term professional involvement in “Kindness and Action”, a Central American dental mission group. Kavita served as Director of the Undergraduate Pediatric Dental Program at the University of Manitoba in 2000-03. Kavita is a full time faculty member at the University of the British of Columbia.
Halley R. White (Certificate and MPH 2006) is a native of Washington State who graduated from Dartmouth College (Cum Laude). She served the officer chain of our local chapter of the American Association of Women Dentists and was a student liaison to the North Carolina Dental Society. She garnered a 2001 AADR Student Research Fellowship that culminated a research award at the 2002 AADR meeting and a first place award in the local table clinic competition. Halley is in private practice in Wilmington, NC.
Martha Hardaway (Certificate and MS 2005) is a native of North Carolina who attended UNC-CH where she completed her degree in Biology. She completed her DMD at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in 2002. Martha was a MUSC Presidential Scholar and served as Editor of the College of Dentistry Yearbook and was President of the MUSU Student Research Group. Martha was awarded the Strowd Roses Foundation in Hispanic Infant Oral Health and she spent two months in language immersion in Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Martha is currently in practice in Boone, NC with Michael Mayhew (1981) and Stacy Conn.
Elizabeth Shick (Certificate and MPH 2005) is a native of North Carolina who completed her BS degree in Pharmacy here at UNC-CH where she is a member of the UNC-CH School of Dentistry Class of 2002. She was active in research leadership and community activities and has spent considerable time in volunteer activities where she served as Spanish translator in a medical/dental setting. Liz has been involved with dental mission work in Mexico, Peru and Russia. Liz is a faculty member in the department of pediatric dentistry at The Children’s Hospital & University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine in Aurora, CO.
Maria Wang (Certificate and PhD 2005) is a native of the People's Republic of China where she completed her DDS and MS degrees in Stomatology at Chengdu, PR in 1996. She won the Derek K. Turner Research Award at the school's Research and Review Day in 2000 and recently completed a doctoral degree in Oral Biology here at UNC-CH. Maria is in private practice in Durham, NC.
Michael Rossitch (Certificate and MS 2004) is a native of Winston-Salem who completed his collegiate and dental school studies here at UNC-CH. As a dental student Michael was frequently on the Dean's List and recognized for his contributions and service to the dental school and community. He served as President of the Spurgeon Dental Society. While in our graduate program he was awarded one of three national AAPD/OMNII Research Fellowship Awards in 2003-04 and was awarded the Turner Award for Outstanding Research at the 2004 UNC-CH Research in Review Day. Matthew Savage (Certificate and MS 2004) is a native of Burlington who completed his collegiate studies here at UNC-CH. He was frequently on the Dean's List and was recognized for his contributions and service to the dental school and community. While in our graduate program Matt was one of three graduate students in the U.S. who was awarded a 2002-03 AAPD/OMNII Research Fellowship Award and was a first place winner in the Advanced Dental Education Competition in the School's Table Clinic Competition in 2004. He was also one of eight national finalists for the Academy's Graduate Student Research Award. Matt is in the practice of Sonny Long (1978) and Judy Laxer in Charlotte, NC.
Kristina Coffield (Certificate and MS 2003) is a native of Washington, NC, who attended the School of Science and Math and then UNC-CH for her collegiate studies. She received a BA degree magna cum laude in psychology and a minor in chemistry in 1995, graduating with Phi Beta Kappa honors. She attended dental school here at Carolina where she graduated with honors. She was named the first recipient of the James R. Roche Award of Excellence by the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. The award is granted to the individual who scores the highest on the written section of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry Examination. Krissy is in practice with Stephanie P. Todd Grooms (Certificate and MS 2003) is a native of Gastonia, completed his collegiate studies here at UNC-CH, having received his BS in biology with a minor in chemistry in 1995. He was a research assistant in the UNC Craniofacial Center while attending college. Todd attended dental school here at Carolina where he was involved as a student leader as well as a frequent community volunteer. As a dental student he received the Zane E. Eargle Scholarship, an honor calling attention to humanism and high involvement in school activities. He graduated from the school of dentistry, receiving Omicron Kappa Upsilon honors. Todd is in private practice in Burlington, NC.
Ryan Haldeman (Dual Certification in Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics, 2003) is a native of California who spent most of his life in Iowa. He attended the University of Iowa for his college days and was a member of the DDS Class of 1998 at Iowa. He was an active student, researcher and leader. He served as student body president at the University of Iowa and was elected to Omicron Kappa Upsilon at graduation. While in our graduate program he was recognized as a Babcock and Sapp Fellow. After graduation, he moved to Asheville, NC and is in a private practice.
Leslee S. Huggins (Certificate) is a native of Texarkana, TX. She graduated from Angelo State University in Texas where in 1990 she received a BS in chemistry with magna cum laude honors. She attended dental school at the Baylor College of Dentistry where she had an outstanding record of leadership, research and scholarship. She is listed in Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities and graduated from Baylor with Omicron Kappa Upsilon honors in 1994. She completed a master's degree in Orthodontics at St. Louis University in 1996.
Marianne M. Sheroan (Certificate and MS 2003) is a native of the rural Kentucky town of Mayfield. She attended Center College, where she was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate in 1996. She attended the University of Louisville where she received dual degrees in dentistry (DMD) and Master's Degree in Oral Biology (MS) completing her studies in May 2000. While attending our graduate program she was honored as a Freedland Advanced Education Fellow and was awarded the Turner Award for Outstanding Research at the 2003 UNC-CH School of Dentistry Research in Review Day. She was also awarded a prestigious AAPD OMNII Research Fellowship for 2002-03. Marianne is teaching at the University of Louisville and working in a private practice.
