Course Description
Emergencies situations do happen. How well prepared are you and your office staff for medical emergencies? Complete a self-assessment and find out how your office can be better prepared to maintain a patient in a stable condition until qualified medical help arrives. This course is designed to review the fundamental principles of reducing risk factors, identifying signs and symptoms and rendering fast, effective treatment for selected emergency situations. Topics include syncope, orthostatic hypotension, aspiration of foreign objects, allergic reactions, hypertension, diabetic reactions, seizure disorder, and cardiac emergencies.

The information presented at this educational activity should improve your ability to
1. develop a basic emergency kit
2. prepare your dental office for emergency situations
3. recognize and manage allergies, respiratory distress, seizures, chest pain, and altered consciousness
4. identify the dos and donts during an emergency situation

About the Speaker

Mrs. Linda Stewart is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Diagnostic Sciences and General Dentistry and a consultant for Total Medical Compliance. She has been involved in Dental Education for over 30 years, and has served as a consultant and staff representative for the American Dental Associations Commission on Dental Accreditation. Mrs. Stewart received her B.S. in Dental Auxiliary Teacher Education and an M.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Mrs. Stewart has directed numerous continuing education seminars at local, state, national and inter-national meetings and has published related articles in professional journals.

Conflict of Interest
In accordance with the ADA CERP Standard V., everyone involved in planning or presenting this educational activity will be required to disclose any relevant financial relationships with commercial interests and this information will be made available to participants at the start of the activity. As a continuing education provider, UNC School of Dentistry is responsible for ensuring the content, quality and scientific integrity of all continuing dental education activities for which credit is provided. The School is also responsible for taking steps to protect against and/or disclose any conflict of interest of the faculty/instructors presenting those courses.

Registration and Fees
The registration fee is $165 for dentists and $115 for team members and includes course materials, CE credit and all meals included in the agenda. All registrations must be received by Friday, November 7, 2014. UNC CDE recommends that you do not make air travel arrangements prior to receiving a receipt of payment or confirmation. UNC CDE is not responsible for any travel-related costs.

Cancellations and Refunds
A registration refund, less a $50 fee, will be issued for cancellations received by Friday, November 7, 2014. No refunds will be issued after Friday, November 7, 2014. The UNC School of Dentistry Continuing Dental Education Program cannot be responsible for the refund of any part of the registration fee as a result of emergencies, unforeseen circumstances, or events beyond its control after the cancellation date. The University reserves the right to cancel or postpone any course due to unforeseen circumstances. In the event of cancellation or postponement, the University will fully refund registration fees but is not responsible for any related costs or expenses to participants, including cancellation fees assessed by hotels, airlines, rental car or travel agencies.

Dental education institutions have an obligation to disseminate new knowledge related to dental practice. In so doing, some presentations may include controversial materials or commercial references. Sponsorship of a continuing education course by the University of North Carolina does not necessarily imply endorsement of a particular philosophy, procedure, or product by this institution.

This continuing education program is presented by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Dentistry and the Continuing Dental Education program. The UNC Continuing Dental Education program is an ADA CERP Recognized Provider. UNC CDEs term of recognition is May 2012 through June 2015. ADA CERP is a service of the American Dental Association to assist dental professionals in identifying quality providers of continuing dental education. ADA CERP does not approve or endorse individual courses or instructors, nor does it imply acceptance of credit hours by boards of dentistry. Concerns or complaints about a CE provider may be directed to the provider or to ADA CERP at www.ada.org/cerp.

Special dietary requirements will be honored whenever possible. Please be sure to notify our office in writing of your special need no later than Friday, November 7, 2014.
