Dr. Valerie Murrah (More Detail)
Dr. Valerie Murrah currently serves as a professor and chair of the School of Dentistry Department of Diagnostic Sciences. She also holds a joint appointment with the UNC School of Medicine in the pathology and otolarynology.
Dr. Murrah obtained her D.M.D. from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville before pursuing her advanced training in oral and maxillofacial pathology at the University of Minnesota and her anatomic pathology training at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis. She served on the faculty at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry from 1983-87 where she was Director of the Oral Diagnosis and Emergency Clinics and the school's first Infection Control Committee Chair. In 1988, Dr. Murrah joined the Department of Pathology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. In 1994, she moved to Atlanta and joined the Pathology Department at Emory University School of Medicine where she served as research director for the Division of Oral, Head and Neck Pathology.
Dr. Murrah has received teaching awards from multiple universities. Her research focuses on tobacco and viral co-factors in oral carcinogenesis and aspects of gene therapy for oral cancer.
