Ms. Lynne Hunt

Ms. Lynne Hunt (More Detail)

On July 1, 2012, Lynne Hunt joined the dental hygiene faculty as a full-time Clinical Assistant Professor. Professor Hunt received a BS in Dental Hygiene/Education from Loyola University of Chicago in 1983; a MS in Dental Hygiene Education from UNC-CH in 2004; and, at present, is pursuing an EdD at North Carolina State University in the School of Leadership, Policy and Adult and Higher Education. Her private practice experience includes five different practice settings, including the UNC Dental Faculty Practice, in three different states.

Prior to joining the School of Dentistry full-time, Ms. Hunt served as a visiting clinical assistant professor from 2010 to 2012 and an adjunct faculty member at UNC-CH from 2004 until 2010. During that time she taught first and second year dental hygiene students in preclinic and the preventive recall clinics and sophomore dental students in the preventive recall clinics. Currently, she is the director of preclinical dental hygiene and is the first year clinic coordinator. She also teaches both periodontology courses within the dental hygiene curriculum. Ms. Hunt is the faculty mentor for the periodontology tract of the senior specialty practicum and co-advisor for the student chapter of ADHA. Professor Hunt is also serving a three-year term on the dental hygiene admissions committee.

One of Professor Hunts enduring interests has been in the intangibles of patient care, including how clinicians build rapport with patients. In 2002, she conducted a clinical trial on relaxation training for subjects with dental anxiety as part of her masters project. Since then, she has trained the first year dental hygiene students on the behavioral management of anxious patients. In addition, Professor Hunt has taught students, dental staff and educators and community health care workers the use of Motivational Interviewing to counsel patients as they move towards changing their behavior. She contributed a chapter on dental anxiety for Mosbys Dental Hygiene: Concepts, Cases and Competencies, 2nd edition, 2008 and co-authored a chapter on motivational interviewing for Preventive Strategies for a Lifetime of Healthy Smiles (expected publication: Fall 2012).

When not teaching or taking classes, Professor Hunt enjoys spending as much time as possible on the coast of North Carolina.
