March 11, 2014
Dear Friend of the UNC School of Dentistry:
It’s a busy time here in the Office of Advancement! As with every spring, our office is busy planning events while the students are busy working towards spring break and, before too long, the end of the semester.
Since we’re talking about events, let’s make sure that you’ve got our upcoming events on your calendar!
- Friday, March 21: UNC School of Dentistry Alumni Reception at the annual Hinman Dental Meeting. The reception will take place in the Maple Room at the Omni Hotel at CNN Center, 6-7:30 p.m.
- Friday, April 11: The 20th School of Dentistry Golf Tournament at Finley Golf Course. Be sure to reach out to Sarah Huppert (919.537.3259, email@example.com) if you want to join the fun on the greens but haven’t seen an invitation.
- Friday, April 25 - Saturday, April 26: The Third Annual Best of Dentistry Weekend right here in Chapel Hill! Space is limited at the Best of Dentistry Gala on Friday night at the Carolina Inn, so be sure to get your RSVP in early! And if your class is up for your five-year cycle class reunion, we hope you’ll come to Chapel Hill and reconnect with classmates at the D.D.S. Class Reunions on Saturday, April 26. If you have questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to me (919.537.3260, firstname.lastname@example.org).
In preparation for all these fun events - and all the pictures sure to be taken - we encourage you to like our Facebook pages for the UNCDAA, the School of Dentistry and the Dental Hygiene Alumni Association. Once you do that, you can tag yourself in our photo albums and share pictures from the events with your friends and family.
We have a couple exciting pieces of news to share. First, we’re thrilled to announce that the UNC Malawi Dental Project won the 2013 Dr. Thomas J. Zwemer Award from the American Dental Association Foundation (ADAF) recently. The project was selected for providing services to underserved populations outside of the U.S. As the winning outreach project, the Malawi Dental Project will receive $5,000 from the ADAF in support of their efforts.
This year, we also brought Give Kids a Smile Day into the school. Planned and managed by three dental students, more than 200 volunteers came together on our Give Kids a Smile Day to provide more than $16,000 of free dental care to nearly 100 Durham Head Start children ages 3-5. The day included dental care as well as a health fair, where representatives from the UNC School of Medicine, the UNC School of Nursing, the Gillings School of Global Public Health and members of the UNC volleyball and football teams participated to teach the kids about their overall health. Don’t miss the photo album that we put on Facebook recapping that day!
Our office always looks forward to the spring, in large part because it brings many of you “home” to Chapel Hill. We hope to see each of you soon and, as always, we thank you for your continued support and your interest in the UNC School of Dentistry.
Tiffany N. Brannan
Director of Communications, UNC School of Dentistry
