UNC DentistrE News

November 14, 2013

Dear Friend of the UNC School of Dentistry,

It's been a busy month here at the UNC School of Dentistry as we prepare for the exam and holiday season! Despite the fluctuation in the temperatures here in Chapel Hill, it's easy to tell the end of 2013 is quickly approaching when you look around the school.

Even during this end-of-the-year bustle, we've been fortunate to hire Dr. Alex Yarborough to our school's faculty. A 2010 graduate of our D.D.S. program, she returns to Chapel Hill as an assistant professor for the Department of Prosthodontics. Her responsibilities will include teaching predoctoral prosthodontic courses, overseeing general dentistry clinics and continuing her research in dental education and sleep apnea.

Two of our D.D.S. students received national honors within the last month. Gabrielle Jackson, D.D.S. Candidate 2016, was named one of 10 dental students nationally to be awarded a National Dental Association Foundation/Colgate-Palmolive scholarship, earning her $1,000 towards her dental education. Additionally, Connie Feng, D.D.S. Candidate 2014, received second-place honors in the ADA Student Ethics Video Contest. You can view the video, which stars two other dental students, on the ADA's website here.

Our students aren't the only ones who've been receiving honors lately. Dr. Thiago Morelli, director of the Predoctoral Periodontal Program, was named a recipient of the 2013 American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) Foundation Fellowship to the Institute for Teaching and Learning in Health Professions. Morelli's award is $4,950 to cover tuition to the Institute for Teaching and Learning program will be paid by the AAP Foundation.

You may recall a few months ago that we mentioned that the school's Prenatal Oral Health Program (pOHP) launched its website. The site strives to further the program's mission of improving the health of every woman, fetus and child, and engage providers to deliver essential preventive oral health services during pregnancy by using pOHP as a model of care. If you're interested in subscribing to pOHP, visit the website's provider registration section and sign up!

We're nearing the end of the tax year, so if you'd like to make your tax-deductible annual gift, set up a recurring gift or make a one-time donation to the Dental Foundation, you may do so online by clicking here or contacting our office (alumni@dentistry.unc.edu, 919.537.3257) to discuss your giving options.

Don't forget to stay in touch with the school and our alumni groups between these emails by connecting with us on Facebook and Twitter! You can like the School of Dentistry, UNCDAA and UNC Dental Hygiene Alumni Association on Facebook, and follow the school on Twitter at @UNCDentistry.

Thank you for your continued investment in and support of our school!
