UNC DentistrE News
November 5, 2012
Dear Friend of the UNC School of Dentistry,
It’s hard to believe the holidays are almost upon us again! The chill in the air here is a reminder that the season is, indeed, changing to winter ... and that is a reminder to our students that the end of the semester (including final exams) will be here soon.
Towards the end of last month, we were thrilled to learn that the ADA House of Delegates elected our very own Chuck Norman, D.D.S. ’77, as ADA president-elect. He was sworn into his new office the day following the election. Dr. Norman will serve as ADA president during the 2013-14 administrative year, effective next fall when the ADA House of Delegates reconvenes. You can read more about his election on our website here.
Next week, the UNC Health Sciences Library (HSL) will host our own Sheldon Peck, D.D.S. ’66, for his lecture “The Modern Value of Early Writings in Medicine and Dentistry.” The lecture, which is open to the public, will focus on the collection of rare books Dr. Peck and his wife, Leena, donated to HSL. The donation of the 163-book collection, called the Sheldon Peck Collection on the History of Orthodontics and Dental Medicine, was supplemented with an endowment fund set-up by the Pecks to continue growing the collection. More information on the collection and the lecture is available here.
We recently completed our scholarship and fellowship selection process. We’re pleased to report that, thanks to the generosity of many of our alumni and friends, the DFNC and UNCDAA were able to present more than 100 D.D.S. and post-D.D.S. students with more than $300,000 to use towards their education. These students are incredibly grateful for this financial investment in their future and the future of dentistry as a whole. (Please note that dental assisting and dental hygiene scholarships are not included here; they are annually selected during spring semester.)
If you want to stay in touch with the school and our alumni groups between these emails, be sure to connect with us on Facebook and Twitter! You can like the School of Dentistry, UNCDAA and UNC Dental Hygiene Alumni Association on Facebook, and follow the school on Twitter at @UNCDentistry.
As always, we want to express our gratitude for all you do to support our school. To make your annual gift, set-up a recurring gift, or make a one-time donation to the Dental Foundation of North Carolina, click here to give online, or contact our office (firstname.lastname@example.org, 919.537.3257) to discuss your giving options.
We hope you have a wonderful month!
