UNC DentistrE News

August 1, 2011

Dear Friend of the UNC School of Dentistry:

Record-breaking heat, lots of humidity, surprise thunderstorms...yes, it's definitely summertime in Chapel Hill. While the weather will likely keep reminding us the summer isn't ending anytime soon, for our incoming students summer is coming to a rapid close.

We'll welcome our new students with an orientation in just a few weeks, followed by their first day as UNC School of Dentistry students on August 22. They'll start their personal journey to graduating from our prestigious school so they can begin their new dental career in a few short years. Along the way to graduation they'll meet other students, patients and professors who will shape their academic and professional development. The collaboration that's encouraged within the walls of our school between disciplines, students and professors is truly unique and one of the things that sets our school apart from the others in the nation.

Of course, students coming to UNC in August is hardly novel. Something a bit more noteworthy, perhaps, is that our school's seventh dean begins her second month with us today. Dr. Jane A. Weintraub took the reins from Dr. John W. Stamm, our interim dean, on July 1. Dean Weintraub is enthusiastic about the school and its future, and is excited to be back at the UNC School of Dentistry. Through her expertise and passion for dentistry, Dean Weintraub will ensure our school continues the standard of success and excellence we're known for maintaining.

As you all know, we're continuing the work on our new Dental Sciences Building. Construction is happening around the clock and progress on the exterior of the building is nearing completion. We're pleased to have set a date for conducting our ribbon-cutting - Saturday, April 28, 2012 - and hope that it will be as exciting for those in attendance as it is for us to hold the event. The ribbon-cutting will be held in conjunction with our first annual Best of Dentistry weekend, a weekend where we'll be able to celebrate class reunions, school milestones and much more in the coming years.

We do have a few events coming up sooner than the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Be sure to mark your calendar for our annual Barbeque and Football party prior to the Homecoming football game against Wake Forest on October 29. Attendees will get to spend their time in the atrium of the Dental Sciences Building, so you won't want to miss it. Also, if you're going to the ADA Annual Meeting in Las Vegas, be sure to stop by our reception in the Egyptian Ballroom on Tuesday, October 11.
