May 12, 2011
Dear Alumni and Friends of the UNC School of Dentistry:
Lenten roses, irises, and honeysuckle are abloom, the days are longer, and energy is high. It's springtime in Chapel Hill! On Sunday, May 8, the season was at its finest as 80 DDS students, 27 masters students, 5 PhD candidates, 32 dental hygienists and 18 dental assistants walked across the stage at Carmichael Arena at the UNC School of Dentistry's 58th Honors Convocation. Dr. Ronald L. Tankersley, immediate past president of the American Dental Association and adjunct professor at the Medical College of Virginia, delivered the convocation address. It was a grand event indeed. Please join me and the Office of Advancement in congratulating the UNC School of Dentistry Class of 2011 and welcoming them as members of the UNC Dental Alumni Association.
Thanks to everyone who came out for the 17th Dental Foundation of North Carolina (DFNC) Golf Tournament, held at Carolina's Finley Golf Course on Friday, April 15. The tournament boasted 103 players and 17 paid sponsors, and netted approximately $10,000 in scholarship funding for dental students. (A list of winners and sponsors is below.) Though no one was able to sink the Hole-in-One to take home a $10,000 cash prize, golfers enjoyed awards and prizes in our raffle draw and Closest to the Cooler contests. Donated prizes from 20 businesses ranged from football tickets to restaurant gift certificates. Please note that next year's tournament will be held on Friday, April 13, 2012 at Finley. Save-the-date cards will be mailed in the Fall, and registration and sponsorship forms will be mailed in February.
On April 16, 170 alums from the Classes of '56, '61, '71, '76, '81, '86, and '91 gathered in Chapel Hill for Reunion Weekend 2011. The schedule of events included a tour of the Dental Sciences Building, currently under construction, followed by a joint reception and individual class dinners at the Rizzo Center in Meadowmont. The weekend was a blast, providing an opportunity to share memories, stories, and fellowship in Chapel Hill. Let me assure you: our alums know how to have fun!
For those planning to attend the 2011 NCDS Annual Session in Myrtle Beach this year, we invite you to join the UNC Dental Alumni Association for an open meeting and breakfast on Friday, May 20 from 7:30-9:00 a.m. at the Lands End room in Brighton Tower. You can find the invitation here. Please RSVP by Tuesday, May 17 (*the originial registration deadline has been extended*) if you're able to join us. Please also note that a Happy Hour for NCDS Mentor Program dental students, sponsored in part by the UNCDAA and the Dental Foundation of North Carolina, will be held later that evening from 6:00-7:30 p.m. at Palladium A. All SOD faculty, students, and alums are invited to this informal networking opportunity.
