Advanced Dental Education

Periodontology Masters Program

Dr. Salvador Nares, Periodontology Masters Program DirectorPeriodontics is that specialty of dentistry which encompasses the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the supporting and surrounding tissues of the teeth or their substitutes, such as dental implants. The specialty also concerns itself with the maintenance of health, function and esthetics of these structures and tissues. The Department of Periodontology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill offers a three-year postdoctoral program leading to a Certificate in Periodontics and a Master of Science degree awarded by the University of North Carolina's Graduate School. Alternatively, the Certificate in Periodontology may be coupled with several additional programs that are combined to create an individualized course of study. They include a Ph.D. in Oral Biology, a M.S. in Clinical Research, a T32 training fellowship for academic dentistry, or a M.P.H. Some programs will require joint acceptance into their respective units.  The advanced training program in Periodontics is approved and accredited by the Council on Dental Education of the American Dental Association. In general, three residents are selected per year in October to begin the program in the following July. Upon completion of the program, graduates are eligible for examination and certification by the American Board of Periodontology.
