Advanced Dental Education
General Practice Residency Certificate Program
The General Practice Residency (GPR) Program is a twelve-month program with second-year option. The GPR Program is fully accredited by the American Dental Association. Completion of the program results in the awarding of a Certificate of Completion.
The GPR Program includes rotations to specialized sites affiliated with the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry and UNC Hospitals. The primary clinical training sites for the program include the dental services of the University of North Carolina Hospitals (4 months on the outpatient service and 1-2 months on the inpatient/OR/sedation rotation), the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Durham, N.C. (4 months), and the Orange County Health Department (1-2 months). Additional rotations during the first year of the program include two weeks each on the Medicine Service at the VAMC-Durham and on the Anesthesiology Service at UNC Hospitals.
The optional second-year curriculum is designed to offer additional time on both outpatient and inpatient services at UNC Hospitals and on elective rotations. The second-year resident serves as Chief Resident for the program.
For academic year 2011-12 we have 6 first-year residents enrolled. Our plan for 2012-2013 is to enroll 6-7 residents between the first and second year curricula.
